What are the requirements for being an SCLC tutor?
SCLC volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years old and live in south Orange County, California.
Some of our Learning Center locations require a background check.
What are the time commitments to volunteer as an SCLC tutor?
SCLC’s Tutor Training Certification program requires completing Tutor Training Modules 1 through 4. The Modules are all online, can be done at your own pace, and should take less than an hour each.
New volunteers must observe three different 60 to 90 minute classes.
Some of our Learning Center locations require additional training for a particular curriculum. The Teacher Training is done online, can be done at your own pace, and can take as long as 16 hours to complete.
Once accepted and certified as an SCLC Volunteer, tutors should commit to class time, as well as the preparation time required for each class session.
Volunteers are encouraged to attend two supplemental training sessions per year which are provided by SCLC.
What level of computer competence must I have to volunteer?
Basic computer skills are helpful but not necessary.
How long does it take to become an SCLC volunteer tutor and begin teaching?
The time it takes depends on when you complete your required training, orientation, and observation. Additionally, training time will depend on your Center location. Training times vary from Center to Center. Lastly, it depends on whether there is a position open and available at your chosen Center.
Do I have any choice in the learning level or student population I work with?
Yes! SCLC volunteer tutors coordinate with their Center Director regarding their desired ELL (English Language Learner) level and class size.
Do I need to know another language to volunteer?
No! English is the language used during most lessons.
