South Coast Literacy Council

Giving the Gift of English

  • South Coast Literacy Council (SCLC) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting adult English learners.

  • Our mission is to help adult English learners achieve basic literacy and acquire language skills necessary for daily living, employment, and full participation in the community.

  • We provide free English classes in multiple physical locations throughout south Orange County and online via Zoom.




All-Volunteer

All Board members and all tutors volunteer their time.

There are no paid positions in SCLC.

Donations and contributions are invested directly into our students' success.

History

1970

SCLC was established and the first tutor training was held. The first learning center was established at St. Edwards Church in Capistrano Beach.

1978

SCLC incorporated as an educational and charitable nonprofit educational corporation operating under the guidelines of Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).

1985

By 1985, there were 10 tutoring centers and about 50 active tutors.

Today

There are 18 tutoring sites from Newport Coast, to Rancho Santa Margarita, to San Clemente. Multiple online classes are also offered. There are over 150 active volunteers. SCLC continues to provide a much-needed, much-appreciated, successful community service.



Funding


Donations

Individual contributions and donations from members and the community are the main sources of funds.

Volunteer Dues

Voluntary membership dues from SCLC volunteers are the next largest source, and help cover the costs of materials, training, and support. SCLC volunteers demonstrate their commitment!

Small Grants

Occasionally, grant funding has been received which is extremely useful.

Ralphs Community Program

Revenues from Ralph’s Community Partners program is a small but steady stream of support which is greatly appreciated.


Independence


SCLC is independent!

  • It received no government support!

  • It has no religious affiliation!

SCLC relies on community support and donated spaces.

As a registered 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions to SCLC are 100% tax-deductible.

Costs and Spending

Where do donations go?


Administrative Costs: Technology and other essential operational costs, such as insurance

Classroom and Volunteer Expenses: Supplies including whiteboards, markers, and writing materials; professional training for our volunteers; occasional morale boosters such as lunches and snacks

Educational Materials and Resources for English Learners: Curriculum, books, newspapers, and online resources (ProLiteracy and Intercambio)
